The Gate anime, based on the light novels written by Takumi Yanai, is probably one of the most unique military anime out there, with its 30+ age protagonist and a plot set in a world where modern-day Japan comes across your typical medieval fantasy era with demigods, elves, dragons and lots of magic. Gate’s best part is that it accurately captures the complexities that can occur from two different worlds coming across each other, with the entire world wanting only to gain more power for themselves. It’s been eight years since we haven’t heard about a Gate season 3 release date, but is the wait finally going to be over?
Gate Season 1 was released on July 4, 2015, while Gate Season 2 was released on January 9, 2016. While the second season-ending of Gate anime was satisfying, it kept us wanting to see more of it.
Gate Anime Plot Summary
Let’s recap the last two seasons before diving into the details for Gate anime season 3.
It’s a pretty normal day in Japan. Youji Itami, a reserved JSDF officer, is on their way to a comic con convention when suddenly, a Gate appears in the middle of Tokyo, where an army of human warriors and Monsters using swords and spears enter Japan to take over this new territory, Japan.

Three months later, the area beyond the Gate is given the title of “Special Region”, and Youji Itami, now the first lieutenant, enters the Special Region to negotiate with them.
Japan sets up their base, and Itami and his team end up saving many villages in the region, slowly building up their good reputation, with three powerful characters joining him: Tuka Luna Marceau, an elf, Lelei La Lelena, a sorcerer and one of the most popular gate anime characters, Rory Mercury, a demi-goddess.
The Kingdom’s Princess, Piña Co Lada forms, soon realizes that Japan’s army is too strong for them, forming an alliance with Itami. The first season introduces vital characters in the story. It introduces us to the politics happening in the Special Region, with a part of the Kingdom in favour of peace with Japan and another opposing it.
Gate Season 2 Summery
The second Season follows trouble stirring in Japan as other countries attempt to take control of Gate . For which they even try to capture the Special Region girls on their visit to Japan.
Later, Prince Zorzal’s hatred against Japan takes over him. Upon becoming the king, he imprisons Piña Co Lada, assassinating those on her side and besieging the Japanese base.

Itami defeats Zorzal, and so Piña becomes the Queen, and promises to bring peace between Japan and the Special Region.
Gate Season 3 Release Date
The anime did not cover the source material; the manga is ongoing. Although the plot’s first two seasons followed the light novels, they only covered five original volumes. So, five side-story light novels are still remaining.
A-1 Pictures produced the first two seasons, but they have not announced a third season for Gate Jietai Kanochi Nite. A-1 Pictures is currently only working on only two other projects, Uta no Prince-sama Taboo Night XXXX, and Eisen Flügel. No update has been heard from the writer Takumi Yanai either.
However, it’s still too soon to lose hope. The producers can change their minds if the manga/light novel remains popular. One example is that saw Blue Exorcist return in season 3, seven years after its last release.
What Will Be the Plot of Anime Gate Season 3?
Without going too in-depth to avoid spoilers, season 3 of Gate is likely to show Japan having further conflicts with the EU, Russia, China, the US, and other countries as they try to have the Gate for themselves, which will likely start a war in the modern world.
Zorzol had vowed in the last episode of Gate season 2 to take revenge so he might also return and attempt to attack Piña’s army. Thule will probably also secretly plot something against the empire because she was crying in the last episode, which means there’s something more she wants.
The Gate 3rd Season will definitely not disappoint because it still has so many exciting things to cover: more politics, unexpected twists, new adventures for Itami and his team, and, let’s not forget, Rory Mercury—everyone loves to see her in action.
Gate Season 3’s Antagonists Might Be Xenomorph
If the producers adapt the Gate: Weigh Anchor novels instead of the manga, season 3 will take place four years after the Gate’s closure. Here, a portal accidentally opens in the Xenomorph world, triggering their attacks in the Special Region.
But in this volume, Japan sends the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force to the Special Region instead of the JSDF, so season 3 of Gate will have some human versus alien actions along with many new characters.
Gate Anime Where to Watch?
The Gate anime is available to watch on multiple online streaming sites, including Crunchyroll, Hulu and Amazon Prime.
While it’s truly frustrating not hearing about Gate season 3 yet, the good part is 2025 is the year where many new anime are being renewed. So, you never know, the JSDF Gate anime update might be around the corner.
